Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has poached three high-profile researchers from OpenAI's Zurich office to join his newly formed "superintelligence" team, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. 

The hires - Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai - mark a significant escalation in the ongoing AI talent war, particularly between Meta and OpenAI.

The move comes just days after OpenAI chief Sam Altman publicly accused Zuckerberg's company of offering up to $100 million in bonuses to lure away his employees.

In a statement last week, Altman said, "I've heard Meta thinks of us as their biggest competitor," highlighting the intensifying rivalry between the two AI powerhouses.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the trio's departure but declined to comment on the reasons. Meta has no responded to media queries regarding the hires, as of this report.

The talent grab adds to Meta's growing push into frontier AI. The company recently brought on board Alexandr Wang, the 28-year-old CEO of Scale AI, to contribute to its superintelligence mission.

In addition to hiring Wang, Meta has also taken a 49% stake in his company for a reported $14.3 billion - further signalling Zuckerberg's all-in approach to artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Meta hires three OpenAI researchers for new 'superintelligence' team: Report

In a major shake-up within the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, Magnum Ice Cream Company is set to acquire a 61.9% stake in Kwality Wall's (India) Ltd (KWIL) from the Unilever Group, as per media reports.

The move follows the planned demerger of Hindustan Unilever Ltd's (HUL) ice cream division, setting the stage for the formation of an independent, publicly listed entity.

Earlier this year, HUL's board gave the green light to spin off its ice cream business, enabling its shareholders to receive proportionate equity stakes in KWIL. 

The demerger is part of a broader global overhaul by parent company Unilever, which in March 2024 announced a strategic separation of its ice cream portfolio into a standalone entity, with a target completion date of Q4 2025.

The acquisition will be carried out through a share purchase agreement between Magnum HoldCo Netherlands B.V. and The Magnum Ice Cream Company B.V., covering shares allotted to Unilever shareholders once the demerger is finalized.

Following listing, Magnum HoldCo will also initiate an open offer for KWIL's public shareholders, in accordance with SEBI regulations.

The transition committee noted that HUL's ice cream segment, which includes flagship brands like Kwality Wall's, Cornetto, and Magnum, operates under a distinct model requiring dedicated cold chain infrastructure and specialized distribution - a clear departure from HUL's mainstream FMCG operations.

The reshuffle aligns with Unilever’s Growth Action Plan (GAP), a strategic blueprint aimed at streamlining global operations and sharpening focus on core categories. 

As part of this vision, the ice cream business will evolve independently, unlocking greater agility and innovation within the frozen desserts space.

Magnum scoops up 61.9% stake in Kwality Wall's post HUL demerger

Brands across sectors are making a beeline to temples as spiritual tourism gains momentum in the country. With Odisha's Jagannath Rath Yatra around the corner and the ongoing Pandharpur Yatra in Maharashtra, brands have begun tapping into the emotional and cultural resonance of the large-scale events to build visibility and trust.

According to Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Co-Founder & Chief Marketing Officer at Vritti Mindwave Media, a rural marketing & activations company, FMCG, BFSI, healthcare, automobile, steel, and cement companies have bolstered their presence at spiritual events like Maha Kumbh, Jagannath Rath Yatra, Char Dham, and Pandharpur Wari this year.

Radhakrishnan said, "These pilgrimages offer unmatched footfall, cultural context, and consumer engagement opportunities that traditional advertising platforms often fail to provide".

Soft drink giant Coca-Cola India is one of the many brands, that is tapping into the spiritual fervor of Jagannath Rath Yatra. According to Vinay Nair, Vice President of Franchise Operations, at Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, "We are enabling access at every touchpoint through cooler walls, hydration carts, and mobile units at the Rath Yatra".

The Atlanta, Geogria-based company served 180 million servings during the course of the Mahakumbh, the company said in its Quarter 1 earnings 2025. 

<strong>'Advertising cost at religious spots'</strong>

Advertising spending in the spiritual tourism space varies widely depending on the scale of the event and the brand’s engagement model. 

Typically, a Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) firm or a Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) company allocate between Rs 25-Rs 50 lakh per event on advertising and promotions, Vritti Media told Storyboard18.

However, the brands may expand their budget for larger pilgrimages like Jagannath Yatra and Maha Kumbh.

On the other hand, auto and healthcare players are likely to splurge an average capital of Rs 15-Rs 30 lakh, and regional brands may shell out between Rs 5-Rs 10 lakh.

For Jagannath Rath Yatra, which is set to begin on June 27 in Puri, marketing spends have surged to an estimated Rs 20-Rs 30 crore from Rs 3-4 crore last year, Shruti Chaturvedi, Founder of branding and marketing agency Chaaipani said.

"While the specific ad spends by sector are not publicly disclosed, current brand activations range between Rs 15 lakh to Rs 2.5 crore for a 10-day presence, depending on the involvement level," Chaturvedi added.

Notably, traditional advertising, such as hoardings and signages, has taken a backseat to the Puri's Rath Yatra. Brands are optimizing service-led interventions, instead. 

"Swiggy, Campa, ACC Cement, Ultratech Cement, Fortune, Cipla, Delhivery, Coca-Cola, Bisleri, and Reliance Foundation are supporting various pilgrim-first civic infrastructure including water kiosks, changing rooms, fans, and crowd assistance zones," according to Chaturvedi.

FMCG major AWL Agri-Business Ltd has opted for a wide array of marketing mediums to engage with consumers. For instance, the company has designed changing stations near the beach, launched a fleet of Fortune-branded e-rickshaws, and product sampling counters, and installed LED displays by the beach along with backlit Fortune product units.  

Sarabjit Singh Puri, Chairman of rural marketing firm, Fateh Rural Ltd said that the estimated kiosks & product display booth ranges between Rs 1.5-Rs 5 lakh for the Jagannath Rath yatra. The estimated cost of hoardings is Rs 2 lakh to Rs 7 lakh, mobile LED vans are Rs 5-Rs 12 lakh, beach or temple wrap branding Rs 5-Rs 10 lakh, rickshaw branding is Rs 50,000-Rs 2 lakh, and sponsorship and cultural nights are between RS 10-Rs 25 lakh, respectively.

For the Pandharpur Yatra in Maharashtra, Radhakrishnan expected that marketing kiosks may range between Rs 50,000 and 1.5 lakh, bus stand audio Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising may cost between Rs 25,000-Rs 75,000, and promotions via  LED vans between Rs 3 lakh for a 10-day campaign, respectively.

<strong>'The high returns'</strong>

Spiritual tourism has become a crucial opportunity for brands who are seeking both reach and recall. According to Radhakrishnan, brands have reported 3 to 7-fold returns on ad spending, especially when campaigns are rooted in local culture and involve consumer engagement.

According to Mukesh Mishra- Joint President, Sales & Marketing – AWL Agri Business, they achieved strong returns in both brand sales and consumer goodwill during the engagements for 'Ayodhya Ram Mandir Consecration' and ‘Mahakumbh 2025’.

However, sometimes the promotional activities at such spiritual and cultural events are not purely transactional, the ROAS (return-on ad-spend) is also measured through 'trust & recall, penetration, photo or video virality, emotional goodwill, offline sampling & trials', the Chaaipani founder said.

Mishra acknowledged that AWL's initiatives helped in building a lasting bond by placing Fortune at the heart of moments that truly matter. "We believe that when a brand’s presence is rooted in genuine purpose, the value created goes far beyond any simple number or conventional marketing metrics," Mishra added.

Chaturvedi has projected that Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra is likely to generate over Rs 50 crore in brand value, with the model poised to cross Rs 200 crore in the coming years, as brands shift from conventional advertising to service-led public participation.

Divine marketing: Brands flock to temples as spiritual tourism booms

Their new "Flavours of Equality" Good Day pack flaunted the colours of the rainbow, celebrating Pride with layers of cashew, butter, pista, badam, chocolate, and fruit & nut - and one notable empty slot.

Together, Wimbledon 2025 and the Formula 1 season have driven an increase in visa-related search queries on Atlys, signaling a growing trend as fans are no longer content to watch from the sidelines, they want to experience it personally.

Wimbledon 2025, scheduled in London from June 30 to July 13, has sparked a 28% rise in UK visa application queries on Atlys. The tournament, held at the All England Club, has evolved into more than just a tennis championship. Fans are extending their trips, combining matches with leisure and sightseeing, and turning Wimbledon into the centerpiece of broader summer travel plans.

Meanwhile, the Formula 1 2025 calendar spanning 24 races across 21 countries is actively shaping travel trends across continents. Since the season kicked off in March, Atlys has seen notable spikes in visa search activity around key host nations, with interest peaking 3 to 5 weeks before each Grand Prix. Countries like Italy, Monaco, Japan and the UK have seen elevated query volumes, aligning with the mid-season stretch of marquee races. Visa-related searches for F1 destinations have surged by 18 to 30%, as fans increasingly build immersive, multi-day trips around race weekends. 

This isn't the first time sports have triggered a spike in outbound travel. Ahead of the Paris Olympics in 2024, Atlys reported a 60% increase in visa applications from India, along with a 50% rise in sports tourism-related inquiries and a 45% jump in group visa applications. The pattern is clear, major sporting events are becoming powerful engines for international travel.

During the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai, there was a notable spike in sports-related travel. Overall bookings to Dubai rose by nearly 45%. This reinforces the growing influence of cricket in shaping regional mobility trends.

Atlys' data points to a clear behavioral shift. Sports fans aren't just flying in for the game; they're extending their trips, combining multiple matches or destinations, and weaving in cultural and leisure experiences. The result is a more immersive, experience-led style of tourism with live sport at its core.

Sporting events push Visa searches up 60%, transforming global tourism, reveals Atlys data

Japanese apparel brand Uniqlo is set to open its first physical store in Bengaluru. With this, the subsidiary of Fast Retailing Co will expand its store presence to 16 in India.

According to the casual wear company, it will open its 16th store on 29 August at Orion Mall, Brigade Gateway.

Uniqlo entered the Indian market in October 2019, with the highest number of stores in Delhi-NCR, Lucknow, and Chandigarh. It opened its first store in Mumbai in 2023. 

"Bengaluru marks the next significant milestone in our India expansion. Over the past few years, we've seen strong demand and brand affinity from Bengaluru through our e-commerce platform, and we look forward to welcoming customers in person to experience Uniqlo LifeWear," Uniqlo said in a media statement.

In a 2024 interview with PTI news agency, Uniqlo India's Chief Operating Officer Kenji Inoue said that the fashion brand has planned to touch the Rs 1,000 crore sales mark in the 2025 fiscal year.

Additionally, it is also planning to elevate its local sourcing to 18% by 2025 from 15.5% last year.

Inoue said he sees a huge potential in the Indian market.

"We at Fast Retailing just achieved 3 trillion yen sales and we are now targeting 10 trillion yen, which is three times, and definitely, this market would be one of the very important markets to (achieve) that," he told PTI news agency.

Uniqlo India reported a 31% rise in revenue to Rs 814.84 crore and a 25% increase in total profit to Rs 85.17 crore in fiscal year 2024.

Microsoft, OpenAI's largest backer, is in active discussions with the startup over revising key aspects of its multi-billion-dollar investment, including the extend of its future equity stake.

According to earlier reports from The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is seeking to renegotiate its position as OpenAI continues to scale rapidly. Meanwhile, The Financial Times reported that the tech giant could put negotiations on hold if both parties fail to agree on critical issues.

Neither Microsoft nor OpenAI has issued official comments in response to the reports.

In addition to discussing corporate matters, Altman also revealed that he recently had "productive talks" with U.S. President Donald Trump on the broader implications of artificial intelligence.

He praised Trump's understanding of AI's economic and geopolitical impact.

Trump, who has returned to the spotlight in policy circles, announced earlier this year a $500 billion private sector AI infrastructure initiative dubbed "Stargate," backed by major players including SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle.

Sam Altman confirms talks with Satya Nadella on future of AI partnership

Fitness influencer Akash Yadav has publicly accused health brand The Whole Truth of allegedly misleading consumers about the sugar content in its products and the way they are marketed. In a recent Instagram reel, Yadav called attention to what he says is a lack of transparency, especially around the brand’s Beginner Protein and its snack offerings.

However, the brand claims the complaint to be baseless and even said that the complaint is resolved. "The complaint, which was misinformed and baseless, has already been resolved with the concerned authorities. Consumers should rest assured that there is absolutely nothing wrong here. Our brand is built on radical transparency. We are perhaps the only brand that declares each and every ingredient on the front of pack. Because we have nothing to hide. But when creators with no expertise in food start opining on nutrition labels without any understanding of food science, it stops being information and becomes misinformation," Shashank Mehta, co-founder, The Whole Truth told Storyboard18.

Yadav claimed that each scoop of The Whole Truth’s Beginner Protein contains 4.3 grams of added sugar, which he argued makes it unsuitable for diabetics, pregnant women and sugar-conscious consumers. He criticized the brand for presenting itself as a health-first, “no secrets” company while including ingredients that may not align with that promise. He even claimed in the reel that he has filed an official complaint against the brand.

Yadav in his reel further questioned the marketing of the brand’s protein bars and hazelnut spreads, especially references on their official website claiming the products are made with real chocolate. Yadav said that it can mislead health-conscious buyers into believing the products are free from added sugars or overly processed ingredients.

The reel sparked discussion among followers, many of whom echoed concerns about clean-label marketing and consumer trust in health-focused brands. 

Replying to the reel on Instagram, Mehta said that claims are baseless, "All three of your points are baseless, as I will prove below. Yet, you've chosen to make this video instead of waiting for the an answer to your complaint - which, btw, hasn't yet reached us." He further clarified all the claims in the comment. However, Yadav still remained stick to his point, saying, "Your protein pack mentions that it id for EVERYONE, but with this much sugar, this protein is not even for general people who are sugar conscious, for diabetics, pregnant women etc."

A U.S. judge has dismissed concerns that an order requiring OpenAI to preserve all ChatGPT chat logs constitutes a “nationwide mass surveillance program,” ruling that the data retention is limited in scope and purpose.

The ruling came in response to objections filed by ChatGPT users after Judge Ona Wang instructed OpenAI to indefinitely retain user chat data—including deleted logs—as part of an ongoing copyright lawsuit.

One objector, a business owner who integrates ChatGPT into company operations, argued that the court order risked exposing confidential materials such as trade secrets and source code. The judge dismissed this filing on procedural grounds, noting the business failed to retain legal representation.

Another user argued the order would harm ChatGPT users by storing "highly sensitive" personal and commercial information, likening the court's directive to a national surveillance effort. Judge Wang rejected that argument as well, stating, “Proposed Intervenor does not explain how a court’s document retention order… is, or could be, a ‘nationwide mass surveillance program.’”

She clarified that the retention directive is solely for litigation purposes and does not involve making user data public. OpenAI has indicated it will continue to challenge the order.

Still, the case highlights growing legal tensions around AI, privacy, and user data. While OpenAI’s systems may not constitute surveillance in the traditional sense, the case serves as a reminder that user interactions with AI platforms are not inherently private—especially when courts get involved.
